Winners of a variety of college scholarships presented by the RISD Excellence in Education Foundation gathered at a breakfast hosted by Fujitsu to accept their awards recently.

The RISD Excellence in Education Foundation recently held an Awards Breakfast to present scholarships to 26 RISD college-bound students.The A.M. Anderson Scholarship for $1,000.00 was awarded Lauren West, of  Lake Highlands High School. The Balfour-Cheek Family Principal’s Scholarship for aBerkner High School athlete went to Mekdes Assefa.

The Anderson Bonner Endowment Scholarship for $2,000 each, honors former slave and extensive North Dallas landowner Anderson Bonner, and is given to students from any of the four RISD schools who are attending Prairie View A&M University.  Recipients are Malcolm McFarland of Lake Highlands High School,  D’Andre  McDonald of Richardson High School and Justin Anderson Bonner. Justin is the grandson of Dr. Harold Bonner’s brother, Walter A. Bonner.

The Dr. Carolyn G. Bukhair Scholarship, for an outstanding AVID participant was awarded to Paola Blas of Lake Highlands High School

The Stephanie Lynne Calams Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Stephanie Lynne Calams, an RISD Teacher. The $2500 scholarship recipients were  Bryan Fajardo, Yonatan Benitez, and Brian Mendoza

The Eagle to Eagle Scholarship honors two outstanding Richardson High School Students who previously attended Spring Creek Elementary School. The two outstanding recipients this year were:  Anna Fields and Meredith Herbst.

The Blake Pinson English Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Blake to honor a graduating student of RISD’S RHS for the study of nutrition, food science or culinary arts. This $1000 scholarship was awarded to Meredith Herbst of Richardson High School.

The Giana Foundation Scholarship for the Visual and Performing Arts is a scholarship fund established to honor graduating seniors who are majoring in visual or performing arts. Recipients will each receive $5,000 and they are:

JJ Pearce High School: Abigail McBroom and Malayna Ellis

Richardson High School: Anna Fields and Garrett Alford

The G Squared Richardson High School Math Challenge Scholarships – Series 2013 are awarded to 6 students from Richardson High School. Each student will receive a $2000 scholarship: Awardees are: Abigail Bronson, Regina Sima, Dawit Welderafael, Brian Mendoza, Yonatan Benitez, and Elysia-Ari Brewington

The Alyssa Little Foundation Scholarship is given in memory of Alyssa Little who graduated from JJ Pearce and received a Journalism degree from Texas Tech.  The 2014 recipient of this $2500 scholarship is  Alyssa Digno.

The Katie Richards Memorial Scholarships are given in memory of Katharine Wiley Richards, a Parkhill Junior High student who died of congenital heart disease at the age of 13. This scholarship has been awarded to three JJ Pearce High School Seniors – Abigail McBroom, Sarah Jolly, and Joselyn Quiros. Each student will receive a scholarship of $1,000.
