A city charter amendment was approved by Richardson voters on Tuesday, changing how the city's mayor gets selected.

Voters approved a Richardson City Charter amendment that will allow them to directly elect the mayor. The amendment passed with 24,118 votes in favor and 8,061 votes against the change, according to the unofficial results.

"Currently, under the Richardson City Charter, a council member is appointed to the position of mayor by the council members," according to a City of Richardson news release.

The election results will be canvassed on Nov. 19 by the City Council.
