Dowdy Studio Owners Are a Husband And Wife Design Powerhouse

Perhaps you've seen the Dowdy Studio wagon pop up at an event here and there and wondered who the creative geniuses were behind the cute, quirky and fun screen-printed shirts and sweaters? Would you be surprised to find out that Dowdy Studio is run out of an East Dallas studio by an adorable husband and wife team in Richardson? We were.

Dylan and Pamela Dowdy are a two-person design powerhouse that takes their wares all across the Dallas-Fort Worth area to events and bazaars. We asked the pair a few fun questions to find out more about how a married couple can live and work together without wanting to play in traffic at the end of the day.

BubbleLife: How long have you lived in Richardson? What's your favorite thing about the community?

Dowdy Studio: We've been residing in our little 1960s home in Richardson for 5 years now, which has given us plenty of time to explore the area. When we moved there we knew nothing about Richardson, so discovering its personality and varying charm was exciting and new. Our all-time favorite thing about the city is its beautiful parks and bike trails. This is where we spend most of our time when not at home or creating in our East Dallas studio.

BubbleLife: Your designs are fun and quirky. What inspires you?

Dowdy Studio: Well thanks! You're making us blush. Our inspiration comes from many places and things. Some of the bigger things that inspire are more things that make us us, like our family heritage, childhood and interests. Pamela has a strong Scandinavian background grew up around a ton of traditional Scandinavian art, which influenced her Foxy Fox and Double Vision illustrations. We both are giant music nuts, and Dylan used to play guitar, so you can see some of that in his work, like the Grand Whale and Rock Hand design.

BubbleLife: What's it like to work with your spouse? Can it be entertaining? Frustrating?

Dowdy Studio: It's awesome! We have the same goofy humor, and love trailing off into imaginative unrealistic stories (hence a Lumberjack Merman). I don't think we'd be doing what we're doing now if it wasn't for the other. We both push each other to do things that challenge us and that sometimes scare us, but it's all good when you get to accomplish it all with the best person in the whole wide world.

BubbleLife: The Dowdy Studio wagon travels quite a bit. What was your most memorable experience?

Dowdy Studio: The best thing about traveling around so much is meeting so many fun, wonderful and amazing people. We've met everyone from hip local business owners, awesome local bands, people letting loose while on vacation, people letting loose because it's the weekend, couples with babies on the way, college students working hard and getting ready to take on the world, other super talented artists, and even some of our Richardson neighbors! Everyone we've met is inspiring and passionate in very different and unique ways. Meeting, hanging out and making new friendships are the most memorable things about doing what we do.

BubbleLife: If you could eat only one meal for dinner for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Dowdy Studio: Ok, this is a hard one to answer. So many choices ... and we can never make up our minds on what to eat for dinner anyways. Perhaps, this question could be asked after time machines are invented, so we can go back and change our answer each time we get tired of eating our old answer. YES! There we go. OK, so our forever dinner will be the ahi tuna burger from Chophouse Burger in Downtown Dallas.
