While you’re out purchasing those last minute holiday gifts, keep in mind that this is also shopping season for burglars, thieves and con artists. Take a look at these chronological safety tips to prevent a Grinch from stealing your Christmas:
Planning your shopping experience:
- If possible, shop during daylight hours. If you have to shop at night, bring a friend or family member.
- Avoid wearing expensive jewelry.
- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash, and keep all money in your front pocket.
Parking your vehicle:
- Pay close attention to where you park your vehicle.
- Park your vehicle as close to a light pole as possible.
- Be sure to lock your car doors, take your keys and hide all valuables inside the car from plain sight.
Things to keep in mind while shopping:
- Establish a meeting place with your group in case you are separated.
- Keep a close eye on your wallets and purses at all times, and make sure your purses are closed.
- Don’t buy more packages than you can carry. Bring a friend or ask a store clerk to help bring packages to your car if necessary.
On your way back to the parking lot:
- Have your keys in hand when leaving the shopping center.
- On the way back to your car, scan the parking lot for suspicious activities.
- If you feel uncomfortable, ask a security officer or store clerk to escort you to your car.
- Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason.
- Check the back seat and around the car before getting in.
Have a safe and happy holiday shopping season!
