The Christmas Puppy

We’ve all seen the commercials: floppy little ears, a cute button nose and big brown eyes, peering from a stocking on Christmas morning. The whole family is squealing with delight over this special present that proves once and for all there is a Santa. 'Tis a warm and fuzzy scene for sure, one that makes your eyes mist — the Christmas Puppy.

But what really brings tears to my eyes is the outcome for some of us who began as adored puppies but ended as unwanted nuisances.

When the puppy chews the furniture, wets the carpet, digs up the flowers and cries at night, many families are not prepared to deal with the training that is necessary to make that puppy a good citizen and family member.

Taking on a dog is an average 12 to 15 year responsibility, or at least it should be. Animal shelters are full of dogs brought in by their owner because they wrecked havoc on the household due to their puppyhood and were deemed too much trouble to keep. Some of us are banned to a backyard pen to live a life of solitude, and others are even dumped by the side of the road to fend for ourselves. Not a happy ending for the adorable little puppy!

The decision to own a pet should never be an impulsive one. It should be given a great deal of thought to make sure that your family is ready to take on that responsibility. And remember, in spite of all the pleas and promises from the kids, they are not qualified to take full responsibility of a pet. Someone like me requires adult supervision.

When you know you are ready to welcome a dog into your home, do your homework.

Consider the adult size and temperament of the breed. Consider the exercise and grooming needs of the breed. Your lifestyle and your children’s ages need to be considered when selecting a puppy. If you buy from a breeder, get references and visit the kennel. Never buy a dog from a pet store as that breeds puppy mills. Consider adopting from the SPCA or one of the many rescues in our city.

Not only at Christmas, but throughout the year, we can enrich your life and bring joy to your family — when you’re ready!
