Eerie tale of a malicious young spirit intent on setting the record straight!

The Legend of Rachel Petersen is a satisfying, spooky, entertaining story that might not have been the best choice for bedtime reading. The author cleverly juggles multiple points of view and timelines to create a fun and eerie tale that will keep readers wondering about the existence of ghosts and a murder that happened over 150 years ago.

The main character, sportswriter Christian Kane, is fed up with his job at the Pittsburgh paper, where he has excelled for many years, and impulsively quits when passed over for a promotion. Instead, he decides to pursue his dreams of writing a best-selling novel. However, he is woefully unprepared for the daunting task of writing such a novel and for what it takes to get a book published once it's written. He's tentatively supported in this endeavor by his loving wife, Shelly, who worries about the practical aspects of their lives when he suddenly quits his well-paying job. While she is his most brutal critic, she is also his most enthusiastic cheerleader, continually boosting his spirits to keep trying.

The plot is well-paced, and an eerie creepiness sets in the moment the couple discovers the long-hidden tombstone on a walk, especially when Christian repeatedly visits the gravesite of his new muse (Rachel Petersen). Headstones are a marvelous source of inspiration, and a child's marker is always heartbreaking and raises questions. I enjoyed how the author told the stories of the Kanes, the Yoders, and Rachel and the Tremont family in alternating chapters, each from a significant character's point of view, showing how the past was bleeding into the present.

The rural Pennsylvania setting felt fresh and interesting, and I liked the inclusion of agricultural history and Civil War events near the farm. I enjoyed it when the Yoder family listened to the Grand Ole Opry on the radio, and the author included the names of real entertainers of the time, famous names readers may recognize. The small and large details gave me a real feel for the place and the area's remoteness, which compounded the brooding atmosphere and unsettled feeling I had while reading. I read this book in an evening, completely absorbed by Christian's, Thaddeus's, and Rachel's stories.

Next Stop, Boston by Iris Dorbian is the compelling story of sixteen-year-old Geri Randall, whose older sister and guardian, supermodel Michelle, is killed in a car accident while on a photoshoot in Italy. In her will, Michelle leaves her assets and the guardianship of her sister to her fiancé, the fading rock star Dez Deacon, a man completely unprepared and unsuitable for the role. The story of Geri and Dez's tumultuous relationship over the next few months is unputdownable!

The main character, Geri, is good-hearted, naïve, and innocent, having been sheltered all her life in special schools to support her dyslexia. Her being hauled out of school and dragged along on Dez's concert tour is interesting on its own; she's a fish out of water, making the best of a horribly confusing situation. But the volatile, hot mess that is Dez Deacon made it traumatic and emotional. While both are grieving Michelle's death, their relationship is adversarial rather than mutually comforting. This situation is on Dez, as he's unable or unwilling to pull himself together and be the man he needs to be. It was heartbreaking watching his mercurial shifts in temperament and verbal abuse, and Geri's life always walking on eggshells around him. Told from multiple points of view, the added perspectives make this story even more robust. The situation continued to deteriorate, with surprising twists that made it impossible for me to put the book down.

I recommend NEXT STOP, BOSTON to readers of contemporary fiction who like unique plot twists and stories about rock-music concert tours.

All Guilty Anyway by Russell W. Johnson is a riveting legal thriller featuring a first-year attorney assigned to the defense of an immigrant mother in what appears to be a slam-dunk case of child abuse. But everything quickly goes off script, starting with no plea deal and ending with a courtroom showdown against a renowned assistant district attorney nicknamed "The Hatchet Lady."

Fledgling defense attorney Ivy Collins had turned her back on joining her father's prestigious law firm and gone to work for Lester "The Truth" Williams, a famed defense attorney who may be beyond his glory days. Sonia Cabrerra, the pregnant mother of eight-year-old Hugo, is in jail awaiting adjudication on charges of child abuse, based on the child's testimony that the scarring on his torso came from her deliberately burning him with a hot skillet grate. Speaking neither English nor Spanish well, she had given the investigating detective compromising answers that indicated she had hurt the boy in the past. However, subsequent questioning in her native language soon revealed a different story than what the police and district attorney were peddling. Still, obtaining corroborative evidence from those who could help prove Sonia's innocence hit roadblocks at every turn. Ivy has her work cut out for her in her first-ever court trial, defending a client who faces overwhelming evidence against her, whom she believes is innocent.

Ivy Collins is an engaging young attorney, ready to do all she can to provide a righteous defense. She's stubborn and headstrong when it comes to being told she can't do something: the initial reason she turned her eyes toward working as a criminal defense attorney rather than following in her demanding and larger-than-life father's footsteps. She's softhearted, too, and willing to help her friends, even considering some shady maneuvers to keep a coworker from being deported. She's a character you want to root for from start to finish.

The plot hinges on a horrible accusation by a seemingly charming little boy, so it's a long shot that readers will be persuaded to sympathize with the accused. However, the author pulls it off, and Sonia Cabrerra becomes the underdog, trapped by circumstances and facing impossible odds. The courtroom scenes are riveting, with all the involved attorneys portrayed as top-notch professionals. For once, none were made to look buffoonish or incompetent, just formidable adversaries. The resolution is satisfying, with careful attention to the future of Sonia and Hugo's unbearably broken mother-child relationship.

I recommend ALL GUILTY ANYWAY to readers of legal thrillers and courtroom dramas.

The Harlot of St. Cecelia's is the first book in author Darcy Graves's new 1920s London-set mystery series featuring Detective Inspector William Garrett of the Dayneton CID. When the body of a beautiful French actress is discovered in the Reading Room of the university library, DI William Garrett is tasked with finding her killer. Clues, however, are hard to come by, and the only witnesses on site were purposely locked in the basement vault the entire time.

The 1920s time frame and London setting provide a vivid, often rainy backdrop for this tale of jealousy, betrayal, revenge, and murder. The victim, Isabelle Jalbert, while having had many admirers over the years, was not well liked among her peers, and several characters were glad to see her demise. Jealousies among the theatre fold abound, and I thought there were a couple of very strong suspects coming from that direction. However, Isabelle had also developed strong emotions in acquaintances outside the theatre, and Garrett had his eye on both witnesses from the library.

While Simon Cross, a former soldier with a damaged soul from his time in the First World War, seemed resigned to being the chief suspect, his sister, Meg, and his library companion, Eden Brior, were not nearly as complacent as to allow the police to dilly-dally around. I enjoyed how they teamed up and took the bull by the horns, working through several clues to try to identify the real killer. The final reveal is exciting and is a surprising showdown of sorts. I look forward to seeing these characters return for the next case.

Breakthrough T1D Announces One Step Closer Luncheon with Coors Family

Breakthrough T1D Dallas Chapter announces the 2026 Breakthrough T1D Dallas Luncheon, One Step Closer, on Thursday, Nov. 19, at 11:30 a.m. at Brook Hollow Golf Club. Emceed by Karen Borta, CBS news anchor and T1D mom, the luncheon will feature A Candid Conversation with Meredith Coors and her son, Peter Coors II, who was diagnosed with T1D at age 11. The conversation will offer a personal look at living with T1D, the advances that have transformed care and the continued need for research toward better treatments and cures.

Meredith Coors became involved with Breakthrough T1D after Peters diagnosis in 2014. Now a University of Notre Dame graduate, Peter recently moved to the Dallas area and works for Andrews Distributing. Since his diagnosis, Meredith and her husband, Peter, have been dedicated to raising funds for T1D research and a cure. Meredith joined the Mountain West Breakthrough T1D Board in 2017 and chaired the organizations 2018 Colorado Gala. She joined Breakthrough T1Ds Global Mission Board in 2022 and is a member of the Stewardship Ambassador Initiative and Clinical Trial Education Volunteer Committee.

Coppell Cross Country Claims Three District Championships, Sends Both Varsity Teams to Regionals

Coppell Cross Country had plenty to celebrate at the District 7-6A Championship on Monday, Oct. 12, at Myers Park in McKinney. The Cowboys and Cowgirls brought home three team championships, with the Varsity Boys, JV Boys and JV Girls all taking first place. The Varsity Girls finished third, earning a spot at the regional meet alongside the Varsity Boys.

All four Coppell teams came home with trophies, reflecting the hard work the runners have put in throughout the season.

The kids attacked the course and left it all out there, Coach Wren said. Each kid had a race plan and nearly every one of them executed it perfectly. To run in 4 races and take home a trophy, 3 of them 1st place, is a testament of how hard our kids have worked this season. I could not be happier for them.

Individual and Team Highlights

Varsity Girls Finish Third, Led by District Champion Maya Easterwood

The Varsity Girls finished third, securing their place at Regionals. Maya Easterwood led Coppell with a first-place finish in 18:44, becoming the District 7-6A individual champion.

Finleigh Sanders-Burk finished third in 19:56, giving Coppell two runners on the district podium. Rachel Stumm placed 13th in 21:02, followed by Angie Nguyen in 20th at 21:28 and Mirabelle Sagel in 23rd at 21:34.

Coach Wren knew the girls would face a close race for the regional qualifying spots.

We knew going in that we could potentially finish anywhere from 1st to 4th, Coach Wren said. I felt strongly that we would qualify but knew we had to run well to do it. I was super proud of the girls' effort and race plan on the course. There was no denying them from claiming that regional qualifier spot.

Easterwood's victory was especially meaningful after finishing second at District the previous two years.

Maya has finished 2nd at the district meet the last two years, so I can't tell you how excited I was for her to finally finish 1st and become district champ, Coach Wren added.

Varsity Boys Capture District Championship

The Varsity Boys claimed the District 7-6A Championship, placing five runners in the top 10.

Sidharth Kerthipati led the Cowboys with a second-place finish in 16:04. Itsuki Pena finished seventh in 16:39, followed by Alesh Khowala in eighth at 16:50, Abishek Suresh in ninth at 16:52 and Sam Meier in 10th at 16:54.

Diego Morales finished just behind them in 11th place with a time of 16:55, while Tanish Neelapu placed 17th in 17:33.

Coach Wren entered the meet knowing the boys had the talent to win, but he also knew they would have to execute their race plan.

We knew that we were the most talented team going in and should win the championship, Coach Wren said. However, I've been a coach for a long time and seen plenty of teams not win that were supposed to. This group wouldn't be denied, though. They executed our race plan perfectly and dominated the competition. They ran like the favorites that they were. Finishing 5 runners in the top 10 is quite impressive.

District All-District Honors

Several Coppell Varsity runners also earned All-District recognition. Athletes finishing in the top 10 received First Team All-District honors, while those placing 11th through 20th earned Second Team All-District honors.

JV Girls Take District Championship

The JV Girls won the district championship with an impressive team score of 25 points, placing six runners in the top 10.

Sabrina Wright led the Cowgirls with a second-place finish in 22:24. Vanini Agarwal finished fourth in 22:48, followed closely by Hannah Stumm in fifth at 22:49. Avery Arthur placed sixth in 22:57, Adeline Mendola finished eighth in 23:01, and Shrriya Bedse placed ninth in 23:28.

Avery Fishman finished 14th in 23:57, followed by Charlotte Baade in 18th at 24:33 and Kate McGrath in 19th at 24:35.

The JVG turned in the 2nd most dominating performance of the meet by scoring 25 points, Coach Wren said. Six girls finished in the top 10. This really speaks to the depth we have on the girls' team. A number of these girls would've run varsity in previous years. Our goal was to win district, and we did it in dominating fashion. Happy for them!

JV Boys Secure District Championship with Perfect Score

The JV Boys turned in one of the day's most memorable performances, winning the district championship with a perfect team score of 15 points.

Coppell swept the first five individual places, led by Isaiah Assefa, who won the race in 17:16. Vihaan Sahni finished second in 17:30, followed by Cannon Stehly in third at 17:48, Rigved Nehere in fourth at 17:49 and Marco Noyola in fifth at 17:54.

Vihaan Sharma added an eighth-place finish in 18:22, and Ahan Kothalkar placed ninth in 18:39, giving Coppell seven runners in the top nine. Lukas Stumm finished 12th in 18:54, followed by Colten Karstendiek in 14th at 19:02.

The most dominating performance of the day was turned in by the JV Boys, Coach Wren said. The boys scored a perfect score of 15 points and had 7 runners in the top 9. It simply was an incredible performance. Our boys' team is extremely deep and this race proved that.

Coach Wren also credited the work the runners have put in throughout the season.

The work they have put in this year led to that success yesterday, he said.

Individual and Coaching Honors

In addition to Coppell's three team championships, several individuals received special recognition for their accomplishments this season.

Maya Easterwood Meet MVP

Easterwood was named Meet MVP after winning the Varsity Girls district championship in 18:44. After finishing second at District in each of the previous two seasons, she earned her first district title and helped the Cowgirls qualify for Regionals.

Alesh Khowala Newcomer of the Year

Khowala earned Newcomer of the Year honors after moving up to varsity competition this season. His eighth-place finish in 16:50 helped the Cowboys capture the district championship and reflected the progress he has made throughout the year.

Coach Landon Wren Boys Coach of the Year

Coach Wren was named Boys Coach of the Year following a season that saw the Varsity Boys capture the district championship and the JV Boys earn a perfect score of 15 points at District. The honor recognizes his leadership and the work behind the boys program's success.

Looking Ahead to Regionals

With three district team championships, multiple All-District selections and individual honors, Coppell now turns its attention to the next challenge.

Both Varsity teams will travel to Lubbock for the regional meet on Monday, Oct. 26, where they will compete against some of the top teams in the state.

We look forward to running at the regional meet in Lubbock on Monday, October 26, against some of the top competition in the state, Coach Wren said. Our boys and girls will be up for the challenge.

Since the championship, PULSE players and staff have continued to connect with fans across North Texas, building excitement for the return of professional womens volleyball to Comerica Center in January 2027.

Since the teams debut on October 16, 2025, Dallas PULSE has given North Texas plenty to celebrate during its historic debut inaugural season. The January 10 home opener set the tone, drawing 2,900 fans with an 87% show rate the team's best-performing match. The 2026 postseason ended with a championship victory over the Omaha Supernovas on May 9 at Comerica Center in Frisco, with 3,100 fans there to witness the historic moment. Dallas PULSE made MLV history as the first expansion team to win a championship in its first season.

The 2027 MLV season is quickly approaching and we are engaging all channels to make sure PULSE fans are energized and ready to go when the action returns, said Dallas PULSE President and CEO Grady Raskin. Coppell XC Posts Strong Times in Final Meet Before District

Coppell Cross Country returned to Pike Middle School on Saturday, Oct. 3, to compete in the Byron Nelson Last Minute Meet after rain altered the teams original plans to race at the Jesuit XC Classic.

While many of Coppells runners did not compete, about half of the team took advantage of one final opportunity to race a 5K before the District 7-6A Championship.

Cooler temperatures and rain made for favorable racing conditions, and Coppell finished the meet with 17 season-best or personal-record times.

Varsity Boys

Diego Morales continued his strong return to racing, finishing ninth in the Varsity Boys race with a time of 16:24.

His performance was about 20 seconds faster than the 16:44 he ran on the same course the previous week.

Isaiah Assefa also turned in a strong performance, running 16:41 to finish 14th.

Easterwood Wins Varsity Girls Race

Maya Easterwood led the way for Coppell in the Varsity Girls race, winning in 18:01.

Easterwood finished 25 seconds ahead of the second-place runner in just her second race of the season. After returning to competition last week, she once again looked strong and comfortable on the course.

JV Boys Finish Fourth

The Coppell JV Boys finished fourth as a team.

Baron Schott led the Cowboys with a ninth-place finish, followed closely by Austin Shelby in 10th. Oscar Martin, Alexander Marks and Calvin Wolf rounded out Coppells top five runners.

JV Girls Compete Well

Akshara Darisipudi was the top finisher for the Coppell JV Girls as the Cowgirls competed against a strong field.

For many of Coppells runners, Saturday provided one final chance to race, gain experience and build confidence before championship season begins.

Looking Ahead to District

Coppell now turns its attention to the District 7-6A Championship on Monday, Oct. 12, at Myers Park in McKinney.

After months of training and another week that produced numerous personal and season-best performances, the Cowboys and Cowgirls will spend the coming week preparing for their biggest meet of the season.

The Cowboys and Cowgirls will use the coming week to prepare for District and their return to Myers Park.

Were proud of their efforts, and well keep pushing forward until the next race!

A baffling murder, multiple storylines, and engaging characters make this second in the series a winner!

Hanging By a Thread is the second book in author Dorothy Howell's cozy series, the Sewing Studio Mysteries, and along with the murder of an abhorred local gold digger, there are multiple subplots of interest to unwind. This robust story caught my attention from the start, and I was quickly drawn into life in Hideaway Grove.

The main character, Abbey Chandler, a recent arrival to town after her high-pressure life in LA imploded, is good-hearted and willing to help her friends and business acquaintances out any way she can. She is swamped with work, mostly favors for others, including Janine, the town's flighty tourism manager, as she prepares for an important upcoming women's conference. Meanwhile, Abbey is trying to build her fledgling tote bag business and juggle volunteers for her charitable project making pillowcase dresses for young girls in Africa. It was exhausting, given what she had on her plate, but I could relate to her load, as could many other readers who have pitched in to make things happen.

The murder sets off the small-town gossip mill, and along with the fear of a killer on the loose, local business owners are scrambling, worried the failure of the sheriff to solve the case will impact the lifeblood of the tourist-dependent economy. Abbey's friend and local business owner, Anna, was most often the herald of imminent doom, spreading any and all rumors, no matter how outlandish. It got to the point where Abbey had to talk to her about the impact of her gossip, but someone needed to have an honest "Come to Jesus" with the woman.

The murder victim is a perfect target, almost universally disliked for her well-discussed and dissected shady past behavior. Not a soul sheds a tear on her behalf, and the sheriff appeared to drag his feet on the investigation. Even with Aunt Sarah directly in his sights, he makes zero effort to drag her in for questioning. However, Abbey, believing she needs to solve the crime herself to save Aunt Sarah, puts off talking to her aunt for far too long. Still, I loved where the story goes with the resolution of the murder.

Other intriguing subplots were winners with me and will have me anxiously awaiting future books in the series. Abbey and Zack's relationship teeters between romantic and antagonistic. Props to Abbey for refusing the flowers; she was way more understanding of how Zack spoke to her than I would have been. Caitlin's personal saga will be one to watch, too, with her perceived future and past dreams so at odds, and a third party in the wings with his own unrequited hopes for a future with her. The baffling mystery at the toy shop also makes a great side story, especially given the suspect's lovely reputation and personality. Tidbits about Abbey's projects and business are sprinkled throughout for the craft-minded among us to enjoy.

With multiple storylines and an engaging array of characters, I recommend HANGING BY A THREAD to cozy mystery readers, especially fans of the previous book and those who enjoy craft-themed stories or tales featuring small businesses.

Rowlett-based nonprofit Friends of Rescue Animals will be on-site with dogs available for adoption. A 2025 Park Place Season of Giving grant recipient, Friends of Rescue Animals is a 100% volunteer-operated nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of homeless pets in North Texas.

Texas A&M University College of Dentistry in Dallas shares some tips about daily mouthwash

Mouthwash, also called mouthrinse, can be a good boost to a daily oral healthcare routine. While it never replaces daily brushing and flossing, rinsing does reach areas difficult for a toothbrush.

But do you really need mouthwash? Maybe not, said Dr. John Safar, clinical faculty in comprehensive dentistry at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry in Dallas.

Those with excellent oral health dont necessarily need a mouthwash if plaque is well controlled and they have no other oral health issues, he said. But some rinses can help re-mineralize enamel and protect against cavities.

If you are unsure, ask your dentist.

To fight against gingivitis and reduce plaque, choose a therapeutic mouthwash with cetylpyridinium chloride or essential oils; all are chemical compounds that kill bacteria. Its found in many over-the-counter products, but dentists also prescribe mouthwashes with chlorhexidine for bad breath to target the volatile sulfur compounds and to guard against tooth decay.

Dentists can prescribe rinse formulations that ease pain from oral lesions, Safar said. They also suggest hydrogen peroxide to brighten smiles or to mimic saliva to help lubricate oral tissues and improve comfort.

Children under 6 years old shouldnt use mouthwash unless directed by their dentists. Their swallowing reflexes arent fully developed, according to the American Dental Association. A small swig usually isnt a cause for alarm and generally wont bring side effects but seek medical attention if a child drinks a large amount or if youre unsure how much was ingested.

Stay calm and check the bottles label for alcohol, fluoride and antimicrobial ingredients that could irritate small stomachs, Safar said. If your child shows signs of intoxication, is nauseous or drowsy, seek immediate emergency medical treatment.

Alcohol-free rinses also are usually gentler, making them good choices for those with sensitive gums, dry mouths or an aversion to the mouthwash burn.

Mouthwashes with alcohol are usually more effective against oral bacteria. Their essential oils help reduce plaque and gingivitis.

Timing also matters, Safar said.

Avoid using mouthwash immediately after brushing, as it can wash away the protective benefits left behind by your toothpaste, he said. Waiting also ensures that the ingredients in both products dont interfere with each others effectiveness.

Dallas Hua Yun Chinese Orchestra at Library-FREE

The ancient Chinese believed music could purify people's minds. Test that theory one yourself while enjoying traditional Chinese music with the Dallas Hua Yun Chinese Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Friday, October 9, at the Allen Public Library, no tickets nor reservations.

The free concert will feature multiple soloists on traditional Chinese instruments that include plucked, mouth-blown, and bowed string. The soloists are Dan Wang with "Sheng", Yuxin Mei with "Pipa," and Daniel Chen with "Erhu", "Gaohu", and "Banhu.

Dedicated to Sino-American cultural exchange, Dallas Hua Yun Chinese Orchestra is the most prominent Chinese music group in the DFW metroplex. Under the direction of James Wang, the band features a variety of traditional Chinese instruments. The concert will feature multiple soloists on traditional Chinese instruments that include plucked, mouth-blown, and bowed string.

The orchestra, which has held an annual concert at the University of Texas at Dallas since 2014, promotes Chinese traditional music education and inspires the pleasure of Chinese music with international audiences. It serves the community through many local events such as the Plano AsiaFest, Crow Museums Chinese Spring Festival, and other venues.

Serving as conductor, Dan Wang was a national competition winner and renowned player of Sheng (a traditional Chinese polyphonic pipe wind musical instrument), she started a professional conductor career in Tianjin Opera and Dance Theatre.

Dr. Yuxin Mei, the Pipa soloist, is the founder and director of Chinese Ensemble at University of North Texas and garnered a PhD in music from UNT.

Daniel Chen, the first chair of Huayun Chinese Orchestra, is a hugely talented performer for all two stringed instruments.

Narcissi by Babette Fraser Hale is a novel about a charming Texas travel writer and blocked novelist who finds himself adrift after the 'cut and run' dissolution of his second marriage. Cole Burnett loves people and learning their stories, but he is especially drawn to women, and they're drawn to him. Told as a thread of connected stories beginning in 1980, they trace his wanderings across Texas in search of his next column and through life, connecting with friends, some of them women, who become his lovers.

Cole is a magnet for interesting people, which serves him well as a writer but also distracts him from his career needs and goals. He writes a popular travel column for a statewide magazine, connecting with folks from all walks of life and circumstances. When he finds himself 'cut loose' midlife, he has a wide net of acquaintances to turn to. Still, he is an unsettled wanderer trying to fill an emptiness inside that his steadfast dedication to his career and craft doesn't. Many of his encounters with friends, readers, and subjects of a current project are women who respond to Cole unlike anyone else they've ever met. For the most part, he is not the pursuer but the pursued, and he willingly drifts into relationships, casual in his mind but inspiring unsubstantiated hope in many of his partners. Each one leaves an indelible mark on their beings.

Author Babette Fraser Hale crafts a mesmerizing, immersive story about these lonely people seeking connection, and I couldn't look away from the choices they make. I was completely caught up in Cole's life and the lives of the women in it, thirsty for each new vignette when someone from his past was revisited. The title and the narcissus flowering at the homestead near his country place with Julia felt absolutely perfect.

I recommend NARCISSI to readers of contemporary fiction.
