Start the day with breakfast, coffee, and camaraderie before the first flight of our friendly competition kicks off at 9am. Shooting is easy with two 12-station courses for each of our two flights, and with exciting raffle items, a 50/50 cash drawing, a BBQ lunch, and prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places, theres something to enjoy at every turn!

2nd Saturday Bird Walks are intended to help beginning and intermediate birders with bird spotting and identification techniques. There are also plenty of opportunities provided for participants to ask questions of experienced birders. Prairie, woodland, and wetland habitats are included in these walks. This program is typically offered monthly from September through June annually. These walks begin promptly at 8 AM and last 1.5 hours.

This program is included in general admission and is free for Heard Museum members. Optional extended time is available by participant request. Be sure to arrive on time, because if you come a few minutes late, the group may have already started their walk. Learn more about birding at the Heard on our Birding page.

WHAT: Americas Pub Quiz is back on Wednesday nights at Lakewood Brewing Co. as the best live-hosted trivia show brings its free quiz nights to the North Dallas brewery and taproom. Dallas own maker of the number one craft milk stout in Texas will be pouring their current lineup of fall and winter beers ranging from seasonal favorite, Punkel, to Salted Caramel Temptress, and the new NuTemptress. Ken Snow and the Linear Groove Jazz Band will showcase their signature sound of 1960s, 70s and contemporary arrangements, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 17, at the Allen Public Library.

A freelance saxophonist (classical/jazz), Ken leads the six-piece jazz group Linear Groove. Spending the last 12 years directing the band at McKinney Christian Academy, he holds a bachelor of music education degree from Hardin-Simmons University and a masters in saxophone performance from the University of Kentucky.

The other members of the band include, on trumpet, Jason Webb, trombonist Chad Wood, pianist Nick Messick, bass guitarist James Driscoll, and drummer Mark Mulligan.

Experience the amazing diversity in wetland vegetation and wildlife while learning about the history and basics of wetland ecology. After a safety and canoeing introduction, spend about 40 minutes on a guided trail around the Heard wetlands, followed by free paddle time to explore on your own.

No experience is necessary for any of the paddle programs. All participants will be given an introduction to canoeing that includes basic strokes, boat safety, and flat water maneuvers. Minimum age: 7 years. All canoe & safety equipment provided.
