In the small village of King’s Abbot, before she commits suicide, Mrs. Ferrars admits to her fiancé, Roger Ackroyd, that she had murdered her husband a year earlier. Ackroyd relays the information to the village doctor, James Sheppard, revealing that the woman was being blackmailed to keep the murder a secret. Later, Ackroyd himself is murdered as he sits in his study, and the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is called out of retirement to investigate. Poirot engages Sheppard’s help to find the killer, referring to the doctor as his “Watson”. Every servant and acquaintance in the household at the time of Ackroyd’s murder has something to hide – but who did it? And why?
